What Flow Forming Does for Inconel 718

Flow forming is a cold-working process that materially improves the alloy's mechanical properties. As three precision rollers apply controlled compressive force to the outer diameter of a tube over a mandrel, the grain structure tightens, yield strength climbs, and wall thickness becomes exceptionally uniform. The result is a seamless tube that extruded or machined-from-bar alternatives typically can't match on a strength-per-unit-weight basis.

Our Enablelloy 718 tubes achieve a minimum tensile strength (UTS) of 190 KSI and a minimum yield strength of 175 KSI: numbers that matter when you're specifying components for jet engine casings, pressure housings, or downhole tools operating at temperatures up to 1300°F.

Frequently Asked Questions About Inconel 718 Tube

Yes, they refer to the same alloy composition (UNS N07718). "Inconel" is a registered trademark of Special Metals Corporation, so the generic industry designation is Alloy 718. You'll see both terms used interchangeably in procurement documents and specifications. Enable Tech's flow-formed version of this alloy is marketed as Enablelloy 718.

Is "Inconel 718" the same thing as "Alloy 718"?

Both AMS 5589 and AMS 5590 cover seamless Alloy 718 tubing. The distinction is the heat treatment condition, not the manufacturing method. AMS 5589 calls for solution annealing at 1775°F followed by precipitation hardening, while AMS 5590 uses a higher solution annealing temperature of 1950°F with a different aging protocol. The result is slightly different mechanical properties and microstructures, which makes the choice specification-dependent. Enable Tech can deliver Enablelloy 718 to either condition. The right answer depends on your end-use requirements and any applicable customer or industry specification.

What's the difference between AMS 5589 and AMS 5590 for Inconel 718 tube?

It can. Flow forming cold works the material, which affects the starting microstructure going into heat treatment. Depending on the final mechanical requirements, tubes may be delivered in the flow-formed, solution-annealed, or precipitation-hardened (aged) condition. The appropriate path depends on your target properties and applicable specification, which is one reason it's useful to involve us early in the process.

Does flow forming change how Inconel 718 needs to be heat treated afterward?

No. Alloy 718 has a fully austenitic crystal structure, which means it's non-magnetic. That property is maintained even after cold working, such as flow forming, making it a viable option in applications where magnetic permeability is a design constraint, such as MWD/LWD downhole instrumentation. If ultra-low permeability is a hard requirement (below ~1.005µ), we can discuss whether one of our other non-magnetic alloys is a better fit.

Is Inconel 718 tube magnetic?

Yes, Inconel 718 is weldable, but it requires care. The alloy is susceptible to Laves phase formation and micro-fissuring in the heat-affected zone, so weld procedure selection and post-weld heat treatment matter. If you're planning to weld our tube into a larger assembly, it's worth discussing the intended heat treatment sequence upfront. In some cases, ordering tube in the solution annealed condition rather than fully aged makes downstream welding more predictable.
